Session 2: Day 1 & 2 - Jumping Right In !

During STEM instruction, with Mr. Waples, we went through scientific notation. Scientific notation makes big and exotic numbers much more simple to understand. There were groups of two to work together. We created a power point of each planet’s circumference, area, radius and diameter. Since the topic was scientific notation, we changed the circumference, area, radius, and diameter to their scientific notation. -Tamye A.

Today July 21^st 2014, in PECO STEM we played basketball for structured free time. We learned how to do layups and we learned how to rebound. I personally, found it hard. Especially since it was my first day learning. I don’t like sports, but I sucked all my pride up and gave the activity my all. When I learned how to layup at first, I missed all my shots, but the mentors encouraged me to do better, and when they started chanting and screaming my name I finally made a shot! I was so exited. When I learned how to do a rebound, we had to stand on a line, spread our legs apart, and find the circle in the middle of the basketball. We had to shoot straight up to hit the line we were standing on. After everybody on my team got the concept of the task, we strived to shoot the ball in the basket. It took me a while to do this also. I find basketball very hard. After I got the concept and figured out what I needed to do. I started to play around and have fun. All and all I enjoyed basketball time. I look forward to doing it for the rest of the week.  Today in basketball camp, I learned teamwork. In order for us to understand the purpose of a layups or a rebound we had to work together. I think my team worked well for it to be our first time. – LaTia W.

Just Dance!

Townhall 

Today in class we began to make a rock candy solution. At first it was very easy until we had to measure our sugar and mix with water with some errors. Then we had to do something really hard: stir the solution while it was on a heater. When we were done we had to put our solutions on a windowsill. We are now waiting for them to turn into solids so we can eat them! We all very much enjoyed this project!! -Paul M.

The Food in the Caf 

Today at breakfast 7/21 we had variety of breakfast foods. Breakfast was ok! Well I really liked lunch only because of the mashed potatoes. I really liked the mashed potatoes because they were creamy not milky, just fine. Well at dinner it was nice. I was mad that they didn’t have any mashed potatoes but I was okay. I also liked dinner because of dessert. I liked dessert because of the ice cream and it was delicious! -Journee N.

Swimming at Widener 

Half of the group got to go swimming! We were all pretty good at swimming and we learned how to float on our back and on your stomach. You have to put a fairly good amount of air in your lungs. We also got to play with wave boards and we got free time. -Marquez C. 

New Fun

Today in PECO STEM we played matt ball. Were we playing kick ball almost, but you get four outs instead of three and you have six bases. We also had a few funny moments and we had a lot of fun. We had more fun when we started figuring out how to play. We could also put as many people on one base as we wanted and the bases were Hula Hoops and you need to be fairly fast. You also can keep running if they get the ball to the bass you just cant get hit by the ball and if they catch the ball your also out.-Marquez C.
