Session 2: STEM Meets The Franklin Institute & More !

Group Two Swims
On Monday 7/28/14 it was the first day my group got in the pool. I thought I wasn’t able to do it but I already took lessons years a go but I’m a expert but every one else was to short or was just learning how to swim.  Miss. Kelsey, Miss. Aaron and Miss. Lindsay taught the lesson today. We first started kicking while holding on a wall and we started blow under water. That part of my day it was so fun and cool I am the tallest camper, so I can go deep in the water. –Ciera C.

The Franklin Institute
On 7/24/14 at the Franklin Institute we got to go in plenty different places. The one place I really liked at the Franklin Institute was the electricity room. I really liked the electricity room only because if you touched the key when u first walked in u would get shocked but it does really hurt. Well after u touch the key when you to someone you would shock him or her. I thought that was cool. That the reason I really liked the electricity. -Journee N.

At the Franklin Institute we went to the new illusion room and that was my favorite exhibit. In the illusion exhibit we went in this room and watch this movie about how our brain and mouth are connected. We thought we were moving but it was just the floor. When we walked out it was a fake laundry mat and once you look into the dryer or washing machine it was spinning and the dot in the middle got bigger. I saw a, ice cream stand and it made ice cream look like brains but we couldn’t get anything but it was so cool. – Ciera C.

The Franklin Institute was so fun! Inside of the Brain room, there was this maze having to do with your nerves. I was over reacting when I went through. It was so funny. Nayomi and I were lost and didn’t know what to do with our selves. Mr. Denzel and Ms. Catherine were trying to guide us through and like I said, it was so funny! Also in the Brain room, we felt how the human brain really felt like. It was moist, soft, squashy and sensitive to your finger. I was so disgusted. The brain was my favorite part of the field trip because it made me laugh the most. – Tamye A.

Sharpening our Skills
On 7/24/14 in PECO STEM, we learned how to budget. We were given 10,000 Waple dollars, and we picked which website we wanted to get our items off of. We were given a various amount of websites to choose, but I chose Sears. The categories that were given was, Bedroom, Bathroom, Livingroom, and Kitchen. Mr. Jess made a bar graph for us to record and calculate the numbers. It all had to add up to 10,000 or it wasn’t going to be right. I only got to Bedroom, & half of Living room but they said we would finish tomorrow. I learned, how to budget and spend money well. I also learned how to take off of it and add on to it. – LaTia W.

On 7-28-14 in PECO STEM, we learned how to manage money, with partners. We got into groups of 3, and we all had to get on a laptop and we chose what rooms we were going to do. I got the bedroom, Camille got the Kitchen and Cierra has the living room. We are going to finish the rest of the rooms tomorrow, because we ran out of time today. This experience was hard to me because, it was basically like we were actually living with each other. We argued like we were literally getting a house together and buying stuff. It was crazy. I learned a lot, I learned you have to work as a team and that you have to spend your money wisely. – LaTia W.

Tie Dye
For our free time on 7/23/14Mr. Jim and Mr. Jess and our language arts teachers made tie dye shirts. The others watch the snake Dori eat a mouse. We make a pattern of rubber bands. Then we put as many dyes as we want on the shirts. Then we put them in bags. Mr. Jess said we are going to get them on either Monday or Tuesday because we’re going on trips these next four days!!!! –Ciera C.

Chemical Reactions
In class we used chemicals to see what would happen to colored paper. Many people didn’t like it because of the smell (I didn’t like it ether L). We used soda, lemon juice, Bleach, and cabbage juice. The Bleached paper turned pure white. The experiment came out well which was good. Be ready for more about class tomorrow! -Paul M.

Separating liquids
We got to learn how to make liquids separate. So it mixed together  when we put food coloring in the water then we took them apart with rubbing alcohol. So the rest that we did was that we were shaking the water to make the agents bond. After the tubes rest for a while they separated again it was fun for most of the campers. -Marquez .C

During STEM instruction on 7/28/14 Mr. Jim taught the class a recipe for mayo. It was really cool. We used, egg yolk, mustard, salt, and lemon juice. We used the wrong mustard, so the mayo wasn’t white. It all came out in a yellow color. Mr. Jim threw it out because we couldn’t eat it but we were going to do more anyway. STEM was fun today. -Tamye

PECO Career Day
After our STEM class on 7-28-14 went to go speak with people from PECO Energy Company. We learned how people have to train before coming on a job. We also met 2 workers that work at PECO. One of the people was from Chester the other one was from Philly. The other visitor didn’t work at PECO. He worked for the company that owns PECO witch is called the Exelon Company. Well I learned a lot about what they do at their job. Journee N.
