Session 2: STEM Activities Day 4

Food Without Heat
Today in PECO STEM, we learned how to cook for without heat. We got split up into groups of two, or three. Depending on how many ingredients we had to give out. My group made Ceviche, but the professor made a side of Kinilaw. Ceviche includes seafood (crabmeat), limejuice, olive oil, Red onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, cilantro and a pinch of salt. I weighed the crabmeat. Camille measured and mixed it and Cierra put the peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos and etc. in the measuring cup. From my knowledge you make Kinilaw with seafood, apple cider, vinegar, red onion(s), tomatoes, bell peppers (sweet), jalapenos, ginger, coconut oil, and a pinch of salt. To me, Kinilaw was better because Ceviche was really spicy. Spicy foods and me don’t get along to well. So of course I spit it out. Both dishes are good to make though. I didn’t know it was possible to cook without heat. – LaTia W.

STEM Basketball
Today in basketball we ran dozens of drills each harder than the last! Then we began to play the game knockout. See in knockout you have to score to get the person in front of you out. We also had a test to see who could dribble the ball the best (aka me! J). We plan to do more drills tomorrow so be ready to hear more about it! -Paul M.

The Observatory
When we went to the observatory we went to the very top of the building. We got to see two double stars and Saturn. It was fun getting to see the stars again it was better this time because we were able to go on the deck which is at the top of the building not the observatory but the room just before you go to the observatory stairs. Then we got to see different stars then the first time we came to camp. The last time we came to camp we got to see one double star and Neptune. Then we took some awesome pics of the buildings from the outside roof. A lot of people really liked the observatory they want to go back when were able to go back.

Free Time
Today, after lunch, we had structured free time. We played football and it was so fun! Of course my team lost but our MVP was Marquez. He got us our one touch down but it’s better then nothing, right? Before we played football we tossed back and fourth wit Mr. Jim and it was cool because I finally caught the football. At the end, both teams argued about what team was the best. Football is so awesome! -Tamye A.
